Squads

Squads allow you to define your players once and reuse them across multiple games. Taking the time to set up your squads before you begin tagging will accelerate game creation and ensure that player data remains consistent throughout your season.

Why Set Up a Squad?

Well-configured squads are foundational to an efficient Tagger workflow. They provide two key benefits:

  • Accelerated game creation — when adding a team to a game, selecting an existing squad automatically populates the player list, eliminating the need to enter players manually for every fixture.
  • Data consistency — player names and numbers are standardised across all games, enabling accurate cross-game comparisons and reliable season-level reporting.

The Squads Page

The Squads page provides a central view of all squads you have created or imported. From here you can create new squads, import squads from a file or cloud workspace, and manage your existing squads.

If no squads have been created yet, you will be presented with two options to get started:

  • New Squad — create a squad from scratch.
  • Import Squad — import a previously saved squad from your local device or cloud workspace.

Once squads exist, both options remain available via the buttons in the top-right corner of the page.

Creating a Squad

Click New to open the create squad dialog. Enter a name for the squad and click Create. The Squad editor will open, where you can complete the full squad details across the available tabs.

The Squad Editor

The squad editor is organised into three tabs: Details, Players, and Starting Team.

Details

Configure the squad name, an optional description, and the team colours (background colour and text colour). The chosen colours are applied throughout Tagger to visually distinguish the two teams during tagging and across all reports.

Players

Add and manage the players within the squad. Each player record contains the following fields:

FieldDescription
NumberThe player's squad number. Must be unique within the squad.
NameThe player's full name.
Short NameAn abbreviated name of up to 6 characters, used in space-constrained views such as pitch visualisations.

Click the + button to add a new player. Click any existing player row to edit or delete that player's details.

Starting Team

The Starting Team tab allows you to define the default lineup and substitutes for the squad. This acts as the basis for the Auto-Set function on the game details page, which automatically pre-populates the starting lineup when the squad is added to a game.

Configure the Number of Starting Players and Number of Substitutes to divide the squad list into three groups:

  • Starting Team — the first n players in the squad list, where n is the configured number of starting players.
  • Substitutes — the following group of players, up to the configured substitute count.
  • Extended Squad — all remaining players beyond the starting and substitute allocations.

To reorder players, click a player to select them (highlighted in blue), then click a second player to swap their positions. Repeat as needed to arrange the lineup in your preferred formation order.

The starting team defined within the squad serves as a default only. Once a squad has been added to a game, the starting lineup for that game can be adjusted independently within the game details, without affecting the underlying squad definition.

Saving a Squad

To save a squad, click Save on the squad card and choose whether to save to your local device or cloud workspace. For full details on saving and backup options, see the Data Management documentation.

Importing a Squad

Click Import to load a previously saved squad. Squads can be imported from two sources:

  • Cloud Workspace — browse and select a squad file from your connected OneDrive or Google Drive workspace.
  • Local File System — select a .json squad file from your device.

If the imported squad already exists in Tagger (matched by ID), it will be updated. If it is a new squad, it will be added to your squad list.

Additional Squad Actions

The following actions are available from the squad card menu:

  • Edit — open the squad in the editor to update its details or player list.
  • Copy — duplicate the squad under a new name. This is useful for creating seasonal variants or alternating strips from an existing squad.
  • Download — export the squad as a .json file directly to your device.
  • Delete — permanently remove the squad from Tagger.

Deleting a squad removes it from Tagger's local storage only. It does not affect any games that were previously created using that squad, nor does it delete any saved squad files from your device or cloud workspace.
